Project Management Unit (PMU)

The Project Management Unit (PMU) within the Ministry of Culture and National Identity was established in March 2007 on the basis of the requirements of the Framework Loan Agreement between Romania and the Council of Europe Development Bank for the implementation of 2 Programmes aiming at the restoration and reconstruction of 21 historical and/or cultural buildingsthat amount to 280 mil EUR:

  • Romanian Peasant Museum
  • Palace of Culture in Iași
  • National Theatre in Bucharest
  • National Art Museum of Romania - Royal Palace
  • National Theater "Vasile Alecsandri" Iași
  • National Library of Romania
  • District Department for Culture and National Heritage in Călărași
  • Art Collections Museum in Bucharest
  • "Al. I. Cuza" Palace in Ruginoasa
  • Natural History Museum "Grigore Antipa" in Bucharest
  • District Department for Culture and National Heritage in Sălaj
  • District Department for Culture and National Heritage in Botoșani
  • ”Brukenthal” National Museum in Sibiu – the Blue House
  • Tescani Cultural Centre - Merăria
  • Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj-Napoca

PMU also implemented non-refundable cultural projects with a grant amounting to 3.5 million EUR:

  • Restoration of  the 5th Gate, Vauban Fortress, Alba Iulia Fortification
  • Restoration of the Gabroveni Inn

Between 2013 and 2017, PMU managed 2 programs financed through the EEA Grants 2009 – 2014, dedicated to the cultural sector:

Adding to the afore-mentioned projects and programmes PMU was also appointed to operate:

  • Creative Europe Desk which is a financing scheme supported by the EU and dedicated to the cultural and creative with focus on 3 major components: culture, media and a trans sectorial segment encompassing both cooperation in the field of cultural policies and a mechanism for bank loans
  • Europe for Citizens Contact Point  which is the information and assistance desk for the 2014 – 2020 EU programme encouraging the 500 mil people of Europe to get involved by means of financing schemes and activities that promote history and common values
